Custom spoon
Every time I carve a spoon, I try to express myself artistically but also make something that's functional. this is one of those pieces I went back and forth on. but I ultimately decided to keep it more functional than I had planned.
That being said it still came out fantastic. Hand carved in spalted maple. with a really great mix of black lines, softer darker wood and hard maple that’s unaffected by the spalting This unique piece would work great as a small spoon or scoop. or just display.
measures 9 inches long and 2 inches across the bowl at its widest.
Inlay is sterling silver with black epoxy signature.
Spalting is a fungal discoloration of the wood and can affect many species. This results in black lines, color changes, and partially decaying wood and this increases its value for those reasons. it also means finding weak spots defects can be common. this spoon has a small spot on the handle that is filled with black epoxy to match the spalting lines. and a small spot in the bowl that would not smooth out like the rest of the spoon. neither of these affect the performance or in my opinion the looks of the spoon.
